As with most of our trips we had no fixed plans and made no bookings other than
to head for the Western Cape.   At the infomation office at Calvinia we heard
of Tankwa National Park and decided to go there.
Tankwa must be South Africa's
best kept secret - a remote and beautiful place.
(Must be Hell in summer). There were no facilities on any kind and you must be completely self-reliant. From Tankwa we planned to go to the Bidou valley following the roads according to our standard road map.   I have an old Readers Digest book of topographical maps of South Africa and that showed a track over the 'Tra-Tra' mountains and decided to take that route to the Bidou valley. In the four days at Tankwa and crossing over the Tra-Tra mountains we encountered three other vehicles - a pickup, a tractor and a donkey cart.     Here are a few photos of the trip. |
